Brahmos will be installed on Scorpenes

The Indo-Russian 'Brahmos' supersonic missiles will be installed on Indian 'Scorpenes' submarines, the 'BrahMos' JV co-director Alexander Maxichev said recently on EuroNaval show in France. 'The missile is ready for launching from subsurface platforms'  - he said. Maxichev explained, that the results of the Indian competition for additional number of submarines will be known soon, and 'we (BrahMos) push for installation on these missiles on them'. Indirectly his message confirms 'Scorpene' is the winner of the tender.

Maxichev also said that the first 'Brahmos' test on new 11356 frigates build for India is planned for early 2011. He pointed out that 'despite some delay in frigates building there is no any delay in Brahmos production'. The propulsion system of this missile is developed and maid in Russia while the guiding system and launcher are developed by Indian side.

How to win in the missiles race. Part 2

This is the second part of the interview with KTRV chief, taken by 'Expert' journal.

Q - Besides the missiles and the aircraft bombs your corporation develops   the sufficiently wide spectrum of sea weapons    . How is developed the cooperation of [KTRV] with our Navies?

A - We have proposed to the Navy commander Vladimir Vysotskiy to develop the whole     program of sea weapons creation. In it the phase of     new ships production and weapons for them must be clearly connected. There before was frequently that there are new torpedoes, but the submarine still stands in the dock. We presented our operating times, I think, this question will succeed in solving in the working order soon.

Q - What new armaments for the Navies does now develop [KTRV]?

A - First of all, this are the torpedoes, including of the large diameter (more than 500 millimeters). They are made by Moscow enterprise “Region”, which forms a part of our corporation. This is chief implementing agency on the sea underwater weapon. It's part is approximately 60 percent of all experimental design works, carried out on this thematic along with Navy, and about 48 percent of the series production. We now complete the tests of the system of antisubmarine complex “Packet- E/NK', which includes new torpedoes and anti-torpedoes for the protection of ship from the submarines. This system allows to counter the attack of enemy and to secure ship, and other hand - to deliver effective retaliatory attack. Furthermore, we continue works on the torpedoes “Squall”, which are capable of under water move at a rate of 100 meters per second. This is the most terrible naval weapons, which was created in the USSR. And I am glad, that it was possible to follow this thematics.

How to win in the missiles race. Part 1.

This is an interview with the chief of Russian 'Tactical Missiles Weapon Corporation' Boris Obnosov about the latest development. Initially it was published in 'Expert' journal.

The tendency toward the total liquidation of strategic carriers and warheads, fixed in the new Russian- American agreement  , unavoidably will lead to the fact that the role and the significance of conventional weapons    will sharply grow   in the very near future. But if with our arsenal of strategic weapon we actually can on the equal talk with the Americans,   in the sphere of conventional armaments there is no basis for parity. For example, the number of our contemporary combat aircraft   is approximately 15 times less than in the USA, the disparity in the number of 'blue water' combat ships between USA and Russia is as 20 times. This means that in   “global nuclear zero” situation Russia has no enough against its potential enemies.

The problem here is not in the quality of our tactical armaments, but in their quantity. While the Americans during the last ten years stocked up more than hundred thousands   aircraft bombs alone,   our army within the same period purchased the air based weapons for only   one day of war. This is so despite the fact that the new Russian missiles,   are not worse than American, but even they are better in a number of characteristics. The main developer of them is "Tactical missile weapon corporation' (KTRV in Russian abbreviation). This is one of most secret corporation in whole Russian  military-industrial complex [VPK in Russian abbreviation]. It was created about eight years ago during the consolidation process of Russian MIC, now it includes almost two ten different enterprises, plants and design houses, dealing in the sphere of air, ground-based and naval weapons. The general director of KTRV Boris Obnosov said us  about the development of new missiles and torpedoes and how they differ from the American analogs, why we should fear China and in what direction   it is necessary Russia to develop its air-based weapon .

The interview with S-400's chief designer.

“The thought of Russian engineer works more rapidly than the thought of Russian bureaucrat”
The Director-General of GSKB “Almaz- Antey” Igor Ashurbeyli about the rocket business

The newspaper “Kommersant”   № 77 (4377) from 30.04.2010

Recently the views of the officials, servicemen and economists on Russian military-industrial complex were split. Sometimes they call it 'the main locomotive' of the development of advanced technologies, sometimes – 'the main brake' of this development. How locomotive and brake go together in its most highly technological branches - creation of air defense systems? Also,   who is behind whom   in reality and how all this is going at the end? About all this the general director of joint stock company “main system design bureau “Almaz- Antey” Igor Ashurbeli spoke to 'Kommersant'.

- What is the primary task and the basic ideology of the concern “Almaz- Antaey” now?

- Well, I can say only about the design branch – GSKB “Almaz- Antaey”. We already grew from the pure air defense, and our future is with the aerospace defense. We overgrew the height of 30 km, which was our upper threshold (ceiling of   the existing anti-aircraft missiles lethal area). Therefore our strategy is: to go from air defense through the antimissile defense to the defense of aerospace.

Russian AAMs. Part 2.

RVV-MD – is a new Russian short-range AAM. The abbreviation means in Russian literally 'a missile air-to-air of  the short range'. It was presented first time this summer in MAKS-2009 Air Show in Zhukovsky, near Moscow. It's intended for high-maneuverable combat and can hit both fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircrafts from any direction at day or night and despite heavy jamming. Its maximal range is 40 km (R-73E has 30 km). IR sensor is 2-color, +-60 deg angle of seeking (R-73E has  +-45 deg) . The maneuver control is aero- and gas-dynamical. The maximal AoA of this missiles is significantly higher than of R-73E.   It can hit targets maneuvering with 12 G. Besides MiG-29/35 and Su-27/30/35 families the missile can   equip Su-25 , Yak-130, helos and  other different planes.

Russian AAMs. Part 1

In general, the serial Russian air-to-air missiles are divided into 4 families: short-range R-73 (AA-11 'Archer'), median range R-77 (RVV-AE) and R-27 (AA-10 'Alamo') and long range R-33 modifications. All these weapons were developed by the missile design house 'Vympel' and now are manufactured by relative new corporation 'Tactical Missiles Weapon', where 'Vympel' was merged. The upgraded variant of R-33 missile is the 300 km range AA-13 'Arrow' (R-37, K-37, Izdeliye 610 or R-VD), but the fighters with needed radar capability (Su-35) is only entering a serial production.  The same is about 'Novator's KS-172 (RVV-L) missile wich extramally long range (400 km) demand according radar capability. The anti-radiation Kh-31 missile previously has only a limited AWACS-kill capability due to the lack of an active radar. The other kinds of new generation missiles are in active development process in Russia and used to be installed on 5th gen PAK-FA/FGFA fighter. They are yet to be de-classified.

Kh-35UE technical details

RIAN's correspondent Dmitry Litovkin reported a week ago about a new improved variant   Kh-35UE of the well known 'Uran' ('Harpoonsky') subsonic AShM. According to his information granted by 'Tactical Missiles Weapon Corporation', the change of the engine to lighter one has allowed bigger fuel tank, which in turn raised the range of the missile more than twice .
Most probably they have changed the old Ukrainian made missile turbo-engine to newest 'Saturn's gas-turbine 36MT engine. It has only 25-33 cm in diameter and thrust of 250-400 kg, dry/total weight 85/100 kg, 0,71 kg/kgf.h fuel efficiency. It allowed the drastic increasing in range for all sorts of Russian subsonic missiles, from tactic to strategic. The missiles speed was also raised.

Russian tactical air-to-ground weapons. Part 2

The 'Tactical Missiles Corporation' is a manufacturer of the 'big bad boys' like Kh-59 long range air-to-ground missile and KAB-1500 guided bomb. During last couple of years a number of new lethal modifications of these weapons were offered for Russian allies. The new weapons have modular structure with changeable warheads, longer range and better defense against jamming. One example: the range of Kh-38 family is rised from 10 to 40 km against its Kh-25M\Kh-29 predecessors. It's known from other sources Kh-59MK2 can have penetrating or cassette warhead (320 and 283 kg). Kh-58UShKE has shorter folded wing for use from internal bays. It hits radars working in 1.2 - 11 GHz A, A', B, B', C diapasons, with preprogramming option for guiding. The range of Kh-58UShKE is rised from 200 to 245 km. Speed - 1200 m/s. The broad using of satellite navigation in both GPS abd GLONASS standards are implemented. This is an interview with the Director General of the Tactic Missiles Corporation Boris Obnossov in Russian English language 'National Defense' issue 1, 2009.

Universal VLS for 'BrahMos' & 'Club' is offered

While the Indo-Russian joint venture is developing a new hypersonic version of the universal 'Brahmos' missile  some vendors have already recognized the great success of the program and offer their own input in the development. 'Morinformsystem-Agat' concern is working on the universal shipborn VLSs for 'Brahmos' and 'Club' missiles. In addition to 'Brahmos' (PJ-10) it can launch all the spectrum of 'Club' family, including hitting surface, subsurface and ground targets: 3M-54TE, 3M-14TE, 91RTE2.
The vendor informs:
Ship general-purpose firing complex (SGPFC) is intended for installation on upgraded and abuilding above-water ships equipped with missiles of attack Club-N and BrahMos complexes.

Russian tactical air-to-ground weapons. Part 1

There is a number of new tactical air-to-ground weapons was permitted for export during last two years in Russia. The most interesting in my opinion are 'Bazalt' PBK-500U (the functional JSOW analog) and MPK modules for broad spectrum of bombs (JDAM's functional analog).
