Russian news agency 'Interfax'
informed yesterday, that NIIR 'Fazotron's Zhuk-AE AESA radar has finished an important stage of its flying tests. According to NIIR's chief designer Yury Gus'kov in these tests all air-to-air and air-to-ground radar modes were checked. The testing pilots were very impressed with radar's capability. 'In its last test the radar has disclosed and tracked 3 flying targets on the distance of up to 148 km. All modes of the radar were tested, including in tail-on engagement and close combat ' – said Gus'kov.

ReplyDeletethe aesa radar range depend not only on number of aesa t/r modules but also on power on each module
say a radar has 1000 aesa modules and other radar has 500 aesa modules but the latter one's aesa modules operate at half the power compared to other radar's aesa modules
so is it the same case with zhuk ae cuz its got only 680 t/r modules but i think these t/rmodules work at highr power compared to other western aesa radars which have more t/r modules
because the technical data which tells at what power t/r modules of apg79,80,rbe2aesa work is not available but its available for zhuk ae

ReplyDeletethis is not only about a power but about the sensitivity too. As a rule AESA is more sensitive than a PESA, but we dont know the comparative figures for different AESAs nor the capability of their DSP\software modules. 148 km distance of tracking is significantly better, that what Zhuk-AE has demonstrated on its first steps: 120 km.

Excellent blog Igorr. Internet is flooded with information about the American and European technology. But finding some information about Russian technology is like finding a needle in a Hey stack (perhaps because of the language issue).

ReplyDeleteFinally the max detection range of Zhuk-AE with 680 MMICs for standard aerial target (fighter with 3 m2 RCS) will be 250 km. I'll explain why and how further in the blog. It's a new information from MAKS-2009.

ReplyDeleteOnly rumors about this. Not sure and could not find a guy from 'Sokol' plant on MAKS to ask him about this. August 13, in RuAF Day there on 'Sokol' were celebrations, but few reports. They reported about Yak-130 flying display, that's all. However, there are number of sources that confirmed 'Sokol's capacity broad involvement in current MiG-29K building. MiG guys on MAKS have confirmed that for me too. So I cannot exclude 'Sokol' already makes something related to new MiGs for RuAF and doesnt report, because only export production is usually reported.
