Russian naval diesels and gas-turbines

In answer to my Indian friends question I've composed a short review about the Russian naval propulsion systems, mainly about the diesels and gas-turbine. Russia makes almost all dimension propulsion for maritime use, from the little dimention diesels, steem  and nuclear propulsion with excepts of those including the gas turbine with power over 27,000 hp  (are still made in Ukraine).
The high rate desels for the fast boats are made by 'Zvezda JSC'. It makes diesel propulsion systems for fast boats, submarine and civilian ships. The tropical versions of the engines are manufactured too.

RUMO company is another Russian naval diesels  manufacturer . The dimensions of the manufactured diesels are 36/45, 23/30, 22/28, 32/40.

The big marine diesels with the 30/38 dimension characteristics are manufactured by 'Kolomensky plant' (Kolomna). This is the information from their manufacturer  :
Diesel engines D42 (Ch.N 30/38) with cylinder bore to piston stroke ratio 30/38 are 4-stroke, medium-speed, turbocharged, intercooled engines arranged in-line. These engines were specially developed for marine propulsion plants and satisfy the requirements for this type of engines.
Marinе engines Ch.N 30/38 with 4, 6, 8 cylinders arranged in-line (engine speed 360-750 rpm) can be used as main and auxiliary engines: to drive propeller, gear-box (gear-box included), reverse gear-box, a.c. and d.c. generator. Exhaust emissions meet the requirements of MARPOL 73/78 and IMO standards.

The manufacturer of the gas-turbines for Navy is Saturn-NPO 
There are 14,000 hp M70FRU, 7000 hp M75RU and 27,500 hp M90FR . However, the propulsion system can include up to 4 such engines.

    The current propulsion system of Gorshkov with 200,000 hp is kept intact. It includes 8 high pressure kettles and 4 sream tourbunes.

    In Russian: "Существующая двигательная установка мощностью 200 тыс. л.с., включающая восемь котлов высокого давления и четыре приводные турбины, должна быть сохранена'.

  3. There been multiple reports saying that IN has opted for a nuke propulsion on gorshy.This is the only reason in the name or mistake of recalculating the lenght of cables needed and stuff.
    Since MTCR,NPT controls russia from selling a paractical nuclear reactor to india, both India and russia are doing stuff like this? No one else is going to know which propulsion Gorshy uses unless they board the carrier. Is it true Igor?
    If gorshy is getting a nuke propulsion inside, it would a greatest thing ever even ignoring the time delays and cost over runs.Its worth the wait.

    I'm sure it's impossible to change a conventional propulsion to nuclear in reasonable manner and safety. If it were possible it would already done on Gorshkov but in reality it's even not on propose. On other hand the Russian high pressure steam technology is rather advanced, they are more economic than any gas turbine propulsion and can use very cheap fuels. So the range is decent.

  5. Ships and boats from Russia have very good propulsion performance. Russia has been famous country for their superiority in the research and development of high speed marine vehicles. Russian naval scientists such as Semyonov, Akimov, Barabanov, Khetagurov and etc have written books that are now read as textbooks of naval architecture in many universities around the world.

    asking about the mig29smt which were returned by algeria and they said inferior parts were used in migs, so what was the real problem in those migs

    It's really was true, that they have used some number of Soviet-made old details for MiG-29SMT production despite there was written in the agreement 'no old part to be used'. It was done without MiG's top chiefs knowing about this, and without noting it in papers, so there is a criminal suit now in Russia against some people involved. MiG itself has paid to these sub-ordinated vendors for the old parts like as they were new. So, unfortunately it's a corruption story. I hope it will not repeat, and they took the control in the hands. However, I can remember such stories in other countries too, like a story in Israel some years ago. They illegally used non-original parts for 'Boeing' repair.
