Kh-35UE technical details

RIAN's correspondent Dmitry Litovkin reported a week ago about a new improved variant   Kh-35UE of the well known 'Uran' ('Harpoonsky') subsonic AShM. According to his information granted by 'Tactical Missiles Weapon Corporation', the change of the engine to lighter one has allowed bigger fuel tank, which in turn raised the range of the missile more than twice .
Most probably they have changed the old Ukrainian made missile turbo-engine to newest 'Saturn's gas-turbine 36MT engine. It has only 25-33 cm in diameter and thrust of 250-400 kg, dry/total weight 85/100 kg, 0,71 kg/kgf.h fuel efficiency. It allowed the drastic increasing in range for all sorts of Russian subsonic missiles, from tactic to strategic. The missiles speed was also raised.

Kh-35UE's guiding system now includes combination of gyro-static, GPS/GLONASS and combined active-passive radar subsystems, which makes the missile more jamming-steady and able to hit broader spectrum of targets. If so strange, why they didn’t offer overtly ground targets hitting capability, while their main competitors did that already ('Club' and 'Brahmos'). However, it could be explained by the long bureaucracy, preventing him from publishing information on MAKS-2009. Indeed, there are two different processes in Russia for giving advertising information about a weapon and for a showcase, so sometimes we can see on exhibitions a weapon without information and information without a weapon. It was reported early that the air-to-ground weapons for the 5th gen. fighter (PAK FA/FGFA) and UCAVs were not allowed for demonstration on MAKS-2009 despite the manufacturers willing so.

there is upgraded version of r77 missiles being offered for mig35 to india

is there a new radar seeker in r77 or upgraded one? and same for r73 upgrade version along with its new seeker or upgraded one?

and which IR seeker r27 missile employ and how good it is?

  3. Hi Zoki!

Kh-35 'Uran' missile is in serial production since middle 90th. It then was net-centric capable with AI coordination into the missiles group in fly - something that US are only now starting to do on upgraded 'Harpoon'. This is the last major upgrade for Kh-35, it's without a significant frame change, so it's fully compatible with the old Kh-35 launcher systems.

I plan to write a separate post about the Russian air-to-air missiles development. Briefly I could say now that they are in principal new active seekers on upgraded Russian AAMs. There are 5th gen seekers, fully digital, twice as lighter and with times-fold more quicker DSP. For example 9B-1103M-150 'Kolibri' is the most compact active radar seeker in the world. Follow the blog for more complete information coming this week.

  5. igor,

will zhuk ae radar have high bandwidth communication or not?

  6. to anon September 6, 2009 6:03 PM:

No, high bandwidth function is still in development on Zhuk-AE, like ELINT and EW too.

BTW, no radar in the world has it right now. It's promised by some AESA developers starting from 2011-2012.

which seeker the naval shtil sam has active or semi active?

  8. Igor , has IN shown interest in Kh-35UE ? Can the seeker attack ground radio contrast target ?

Shtil realizes semi-active principle of guiding.

Donno about Indian interests, however I'm sure Indian Nave being the first customer of Uran missiles will ask for the new Kh-35UE variant if decides to nuy more missiles for its inventory.

About its radar seeker - it's not so powerfull of course to discriminate a moving ground target as a tank. It's not easy purpose even for a radar on a manned aircraft. For a big static targets like a house the missile radar capability + GPS/GLONASS navigation with inertial gyro must be enough. However it needs certain rework of the software.

isn't the active seeker of r77 missile being used on shtil sam

  13. to Zoki:

They dont discose their prospective studies on AESA. Now it's still slotted array becose it's well enoough for the AA purpose and times cheaper.

The last 9M317 missile for Buk/Shtil is inertial/radio-correction on the middle course + semi-active, enough for its range. RVV-AE has longer range, so an active seeker is obligate.

    about ka28 anti submarine helicopter

which magnetic anomaly detector it has and how does it works?

and what are other systems on board like surface search radar, dipping sonar, torpedo etc etc and their specifications

    ReplyDelete
  16. The name of the magnetic detection system in 'Osminog-E' , which has a radar for maritime target detecton (including periscops). Too it has the highly sensitive magnetic sensors, magnitometer APM-73V able to detect the subs in the underwate position and direct the helicopter to the right direction automatically. Also give recomendation on the kind of weapon to use. Has too the 36 dropped hydro-acoustic buoys (RGB-100 or RGB-NM-1) and one stationar hydo-acoustic station: Ros'-V (VGS-3) dipping sonar. Can take 1 torpedo or 1 missile-torpedo (AT-1MV or APR-2) or 6-8 a-sub charges (PLAB-250-120) or guided charges (KAB-250PL). It can detect a sub running up to 40.5 kn on 500 m deepnes. On the last project (Krivak III, Neustashimy, Udaloi) the information is displayed and datalinked with the ship.

The Controlled area is 1660 square km or 2000 - with dropped buoys. Ferry range - 800 km. The Indian version of the helo has more powerfull engines, more fuel and a bit more modern 'Izumrud' sonobuoy system with RGB-16 buoys. It's used to be with Kh-35 'Uran' AShM option too.

The last promoted upgrade is the changing 'Osminog' with 'Leninets's' 'Lira' system. It has all new central computer, radar, sonar, sonobuoys, ESM, MAD and radio.

india decided to buy ka31,what the probable cost of new built kh28/31 will be?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Can existing Kh-35 in Indian Navy inventory be upgraded with the new engine? IN currently has 16 each on at least 12 warships that I can recall. With Brahmos becoming the standard AShM I wonder what is to become of these older missiles.

    ReplyDelete
  19. to anon September 13, 2009 10:28 AM:

It is hardly worth since it needs frame reworkng to put there more liquid fuel. More promising way - to change the old missiles to some new after their life term is expired. They are 10-15 years old, till age 20 they all must be renew or retire. But if BrahMos is on the way, why bother with Kh-35 in most cases? It's could be actual to only little (500 t) fast boats, like 'Molniya'.
